Through my work with long-term disaster resettlements, I have repeatedly found that the social/cultural dimensions of recovery are rarely implemented as a critical and necessary outcome for future success. Infrastructure, housing, water, and livelihoods are, of course, vital; additionally, building “community” empowers survivors to sustain a healthy environment once the organizations leave and the cameras are gone. CADAN recognizes this need and locates cultural and social issues at the center of disaster recovery. It also maintains a normative commitment to utilize academic knowledge to support organizations and institutions addressing the critical challenges in situ.
